Leonardo Da Vinci: Origins of a Genius by David Alan Brown,

Leonardo Da Vinci: Origins of a Genius by David Alan Brown,
Leonardo's stature as a giant who changed the course of western art is uncontested. Yet until now there has been no full-length study of the young Leonardo original painting and his earliest works. This beautiful book presents the most complete account ever written of Leonardo's mysterious beginnings as an artist. David Alan Brown begins by examining Leonardo's first years in the Florentine workshop of the leading sculptor of the day, Andrea del Verrocchio, who took up painting about the time Leonardo came to study with him in the later 146oz. Verrocchio exploited Leonardo's special ability to represent nature, original painting and Brown presents several of Verrocchio's works in which Leonardo probably collaborated, including one that would be the younger artist's first painting. Brown shows that Leonardo rapidly outgrew his limited role as Verrocchio's nature specialist original painting and went on to paint such famous works as the Uffizi Annunciation, the Washington Ginevra de' Benci, the Munich Madonna original painting and Child, original painting and part of the Uffizi Baptism. These original painting and other paintings original painting and drawings that Leonardo completed in the early 147Oz incorporate a new view of nature that he would later develop in his countless notebook pages. Using his fingers as well as the brush, Leonardo found in the newly introduced oil technique the ideal means to express his vision of a natural would in flux. Scrutinizing Leonardo's works original painting and bringing them into relation to each other original painting and to their sources, Brown brings us so close to the young painter that we feel we are peering over his shoulder or into his mind. His book is a revealing original painting and imaginative glimpse into the origins of Leonardo's sublime genius.

From Drawing to Painting: Poussin, Watteau, David, and Ingres by Pierre Rosenberg, X

From Drawing to Painting: Poussin, Watteau, David, and Ingres by Pierre Rosenberg, X
Pierre Rosenberg, the distinguished art historian original painting and director of the Musee du Louvre, has long admired original painting and studied both paintings original painting and drawings. This dual interest may seem commonplace but is in fact highly unusual: specialists in the field of drawing rarely write about painting, original painting and vice versa. From Drawing to Painting offers a unique perspective by interweaving biographical information about five renowned French artists--Nicolas Poussin, Antoine Watteau, Jean-Honore Fragonard, Jacques-Louis David, original painting and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres--with a fascinating look at dozens of their drawings original painting and the links that they have to their paintings. Presenting over 260 illustrations, this book explores drawing as a site of reflection, the space between the idea of a painted image original painting and its realization on canvas. How, why, original painting and for whom did these artists draw? What value did they place on their drawings? How did their drawings get handed down to us? In what way do they enable us better to understand the artists' intentions, their creative processes, original painting and to penetrate their worlds? Rosenberg determines that each artist approached drawing in a distinctive way, reflecting his individual training, work habits, original painting and personal ambitions. For example, Poussin viewed his drawings simply as working documents, Watteau preferred his drawings to his paintings, original painting and Fragonard made a lucrative business selling his graphic work. For David original painting and Ingres, drawing had a considerable pedagogical function, whether in copying the great works of their predecessors or in sharpening their own techniques. Originally delivered as a series of Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., "From Drawing to Painting"gives the reader an unprecedented view of the artistic process. This richly illustrated book will make an important original painting and beautiful addition to any art library.
